When I get close to a +, I snip it out of the fabric before it gets in my way. The way I've always gridded my fabric is to use dirt cheap thread to stitch a small + every place on the fabric where the grid lines intersect. When I was reading another post I saw that people were talking about gridding their fabric by drawing the grid on it with pencil, and it seemed like a lot of people have done it that way.
